Unreal
I have no idea how the latest anti-Kerry scandal is going to play out, but this NY Times article about the “controversy” is a perfect example of how the media looooooves to stand on the sidelines and pretend that each side of the “debate” somehow deserves equal consideration. Dig this:
The latest flap, in which Mr. Kerry accused Republicans of distorting what he said on the West Coast on Monday, was another example of the heated rhetoric surrounding the war issue as the Congressional elections approach.
Now, Kerry didn’t just accuse the Republicans of distorting what he said. The Republicans did distort what he said. It’s as asinine as saying, “The Republicans accused Osama bin Laden of making threats against America.” It is a fact that Osama bin Laden has made threats against America. There’s no question that John Kerry would not disparage American troops. You wanna know why? Because no one would disparage American troops. No politician, no citizen, no one. Especially a Vietnam vet like John Kerry. So why does the Times intimate that the Republicans might actually have a point?
At least they quoted the most important part of his rebuttal. Which, if you haven’t heard the whole thing, you really should check it out (via CNN … scroll down for link to video). It’s about freaking time someone actually defended reality:
“If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’re crazy,” Mr. Kerry said in a statement. “I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.
“I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed-suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq,” Mr. Kerry went on. “It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.”

There was a guy on the radio last year that disparaged the US troops. I forget who he wrote for, but he wrote an article saying that he didn’t care for the armed forces or the people in them. I don’t think he meant to sound stupid, it just came out that way.
I do think Kerry has gotten picked on unfairly the past few years, but c’mon, he’s kind of a dope.

Okay, yeah, I’ll grant you that we live in a world where people have many different opinions and some people do not believe in supporting the troops. But the only reason the White House seized on Kerry’s statement is because they wanted to convince the dumbest of the dumb in this country that Democrats don’t believe in the soldiers.
As for him being a dope - all I can say is that I wish there were Democrats as eloquent and well-spoken as George W. Bush, but it just ain’t gonna happen. That kind of rhetorical genius only comes around once every hundred years.

For some reason you just can’t compare Bush’s malapropisms and general comment-gaffery with anybody else’s. I’m not sure why, but it’s liek totally unacceptable. Of course Bush puts his foot in his mouth way more than Kerry, but I think for some reason, people actually expect Kerry to be a little smarter.
I think Kerry was right, it was a joke that he botched, and after hearing his explanation, it probably would have been funny if he had gotten it right. Imagine all the news stories as they could have been: “Kerry makes fun of President Bush”. Stir the pot a little, cause a little brouhaha. But he went and messed up his own joke and got lambasted for it.
I do wish the Democrats could come up with someone smooth, someone with charisma and charm and a backbone. How about Hannibal from the A-team? Or maybe the whole A-team?

People do expect Kerry to be smarter than Bush, which is a shame. I mean, the other guy is actually our president.
I think Obama’s a strong possibility, although I still have to figure out if that’s because he’s good-looking and charismatic or if it’s because he’s actually a god politician. The main problem is that it seems pretty much impossible to keep perspective in Washington. I tried to figure out what in the Hell I was voting for in this election and I couldn’t even say for sure. There’s so much crap stuffed into congressional bills that it seems like you’re constantly having to sacrifice your ideals … after time, how do you even know what your ideals are anymore?
As for the A-Team, now, that’s just ridiculous. Faceman is obviously a better candidate than Hannibal.
