Your English Lesson of the Day
Today I went to Urban Dictionary to check out the meaning of the word “hyphy.” I first read this word in the summer edition of the Amoeba Music Buyer’s Guide, in a description written by the San Francisco store employee known as “Gabby” (although her description informs us that “SOME CALL ME GABBITRON”). Here’s what Gabbitron had to say about E-40’s record My Ghetto Report Card:
Jesus had dreads and shook em. I ain’t got none but I’m plannin’ on growin’ some. He’s been around for 14+ years and he’s finally kicked open the door for hyphy!
Thank God! Someone has finally kicked open the door for hyphy! How many years has hyphy cowered patiently outside the door, lacking the strength to kick the door open itself? I had to find out what this amazing new slang word meant.
According to Urban Dictionary contributer BayAreaPimpstress, hyphy means: crazy, high-energy, temperamental. This is the sentence she used to demonstrate her definition:
Them ninjas hella hyphy hangin out the doors in the scraper!
Who are them ninjas? What the Hell is a scraper? Some things, you don’t even want to know. If I truly understood this sentence, something tells me I wouldn’t enjoy it nearly as much.
Incidentally, here’s what Gabbitron had to say about Keak Da Sneak’s That’s My Word:
Get your fresh white tee, put on your stunnaz and gas, break dip in your scraper. Let them all see you gettin’ dumb … yaddadamean?
