I think he was sincerely sorry, and he didn't really try to excuse himself. Letterman asked if maybe he was trying to make it over the top as a way out of the situation, get people to laugh and think he's crazy but they took it the wrong way. Kramer said maybe a little bit, but he didn't take the easy way out and say, "Oh yeah, that's exactly what I was doing". I find it easier to forgive him than Mel Gibson though. Or Russell Crowe.
