We Hate Friedman, Right?
As part of the liberal elite, I know I’m supposed to hate Thomas Friedman. Would someone remind me why this is? I read From Beirut to Jerusalem before I knew I was supposed to hate him, and I really liked it. I just heard him talking about his new book on Terry Gross last night and he was preaching in favor of good things that I believe in. So why do we hate him, again? Is it because he’s a blowhard? Or was he pro-Iraq invasion?
Dirty little liberal secret #2: I kinda think Chris Matthews is hilarious.
Complete non sequitur: Bob Herbert from the NY Times looks like a Frankenstein:
Read his column today, anyway.

I dislike Friedman because he doesn’t know how to take a joke:

If someone is trying to throw a delicious pie at you, just stand there and take it. Otherwise it isn’t funny for the rest of us. (Although his arm flailing and near slippage in his penny loafers was pretty funny).

He supported the invasion of Iraq, before deciding the Bush administration had screwed it up. Which, you know, no LIBERALS would ever do.
Honestly, I’m not sure why we’re supposed to hate him, and I don’t really know any more about him than what I’ve read on Wikipedia. I’m sure I’ve heard stupid quotes from him (and probably some non-stupid ones, too), but none have stuck to him in my mind.
I also think Chris Matthews is often hilarious. Aren’t we supposed to? I thought we liberals were supposed to love those pinkos at MSNBC, particularly the one who was a speechwriter for Jimmy Carter…
Of course, I’m secretly in love with Keith Olbermann, and Matthews snapped at him during the DNC, so I guess maybe THAT’S why I’m not supposed to like him.
