Oct 7th, 2008 | LAS VEGAS — Nevada state authorities are raiding the Las Vegas headquarters of an organization that works to get low-income people to vote.

A Nevada secretary of state’s office spokesman said Tuesday that investigators are looking for evidence of voter fraud at the office of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, also called ACORN.

No one was at the ACORN office when state agents arrived with a search warrant and began carting records and documents away.

Secretary of State spokesman Bob Walsh says ACORN is accused of submitting multiple voter registrations with false and duplicate names.

The raid comes two months after state and federal authorities formed a task force to pursue election-fraud allegations in Nevada.

Who’s behind this raid? Here’s a little hint:

Registration drives conducted by ACORN in several states are under scrutiny by local elections officials for the accuracy of cards gathered by its workers.

The group also has been the object of heated denunciations from the Republican National Committee and the McCain campaign, which contend the group is attempting to overwhelm election officials with new registrations that are carelessly gathered and would enable unqualified voters to get on the rolls.

Uggggh. That’s the sound of me shuddering. I don’t even understand how this strategy would work. Isn’t it up to the state to make sure people registering to vote are qualified to vote? So the McCain campaign is saying that the Nevada government is so incompetent, they’ll allow anyone who turns in a voter registration card to vote and never bother to check to make sure that person really exists?

Dear Republicans: we are not like you. We win (or rather, lose) our elections the honest way. Sorry, I got a little excited there. Just, do me a favor and check out this website for ACORN. Note the skin color of the people featured on the front page. I’m sure it’s total coincidence that the Republicans are actively trying to stop people with this skin color from voting. They just really believe in democracy.
