What Does It Mean to Be an Economic Centrist?
So, apparently we’re getting a hopelessly watered-down stimulus bill that’s not going to do jack shit because we’re all trying to appease the economic “centrists.” An economic centrist, to me, would stand between the rich and the poor. So that would be someone who was primarily concerned with the needs of the middle class, right? But 10% of the country holds 90% of the wealth. So if you stand between the rich and the poor, aren’t you invariably going to be way more slanted toward the rich? Meaning, you give equal weight to the 10% minority as you do to the vast 90% majority? Then how could that be considered centrism?
I am embarrassingly stupid about financial matters, but Rachel Maddow had a piece the other night that helped me understand what the economic stimulus bill is hoping to accomplish and why it is basically useless if it’s compromised:

The part about food stamps is pretty interesting. So essentially, she’s saying that public welfare is one of the most effective ways to help our economy. Doesn’t it seem like the world is all upside-downy sometimes?
